Winston-Salem is a city of
186,000 located in the beautiful rolling hills of North Carolina known as the
Piedmont. Stroll ten minutes one way from campus and you are in the beautiful
tree-shaded serenity of historic Old Salem (pictured at right) —an eighteenth century village
preserving the religious and cultural origins of the city. Ten minutes the
other way and you are in the heart of the city’s downtown entertainment
district with restaurants, art galleries and shops. The campus is also just
down the street from the historic West End neighborhood, known for its
excellent dining, shopping and 100-year old homes with sweeping front porches.
An hour’s drive west of town leads you to the glorious Appalachian Mountains
where you can ski, hike, canoe or wind
along America’s favorite drive, the Blue
Ridge Parkway. Drive three hours east
and you will be sunning or catching big blues at the beautiful North Carolina coast.
Winston-Salem has a long tradition of supporting both folk and fine arts. Here
there are cultural, recreational and artistic opportunities for everyone.
On Easter morning thousands of people attend the famous sunrise service at Old
Salem. And year after year the community performance of Handel’s Messiah
delights crowds during the Christmas season.
Winston-Salem is also home to numerous churches providing opportunities for
Piedmont students to serve the community and gain the practical experience
required through the college curriculum.
