Mr. Phil Franklin
A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, Coach Franklin started coaching in 1977. This started a journey from coaching high school in North Carolina and Virginia back to North Carolina at Piedmont. During his first six years of coaching his teams captured five conference championships, four state appearances and two state finals. In 1987 Coach Franklin started his days of coaching at PBC that continued to 1997. During those years as the men’s head coach Piedmont became to be a well respected basketball program in the South Region of the NCCAA Division II league. In 1994 Piedmont posted a NCCAA Regional Championship and a birth in the National Playoffs in Springfield, Missouri. Two new beginnings for Coach Franklin have taken place since 2001. In the fall semester of 2001 Coach Franklin made a commitment to reestablish the Women’s basketball program and in 2005 he accepted the opportunity to become the women’s volleyball coach. Both sports have become very competitive in the tough South region of the NCCAA. “Piedmont has great reason to be very proud of its athletic program, not just because of its success, as some measure success, but because of the men and women who have been a part of this program who are now using the same valuable lessons they learned from the game of basketball and volleyball. Today, these athletes’s are players in a different arena, serving the Lord around the world. The thing that I cherish the most about the years of coaching is having a part in their lives and seeing them in ministry for Christ.”
